History

General Motors began operations in Toledo, Ohio in 1916 in a plant purchased from the Warner Gear Company located on the city's West Side.  Original operations were directed by the Chevrolet Motor Division.  During the 1920's and 30's, Toledo plant employees produced manual transmissions for trucks and passenger vehicles.  Throughout World War II, the plant on Central Avenue continued operations, manufacturing truck transfer cases and transmissions for four and six-wheel drive military trucks.

General Motors purchased the Alexis Road property in 1956 from the Martin Parry Corporation and the Brown Trailer Company at a cost of 4.3 million dollars.  Operations were halted at the Central Avenue site in 1957 when the equipment was moved to Chevrolet plants in Muncie, Indiana and Saginaw, Michigan.  Central Avenue employees were transferred to the present Alexis Road location, north of the original site.

Since 1956, five major expansions have added to the plant's original 414,000 square foot facility.  The Toledo plant currently utilizes over 1.7 million square feet of manufacturing space on 151 acres. Additions to the property include a Powerhouse, located east of the main structure, a Quality Assurance Center and a Six-Speed Rear-Wheel-Drive Manufacturing facility.

Currently six-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic transmissons are produced with front-wheel-drive automatic transmissions expected to come on line by mid 2010.
